5 Winter Road Trips Near Buffalo, NY

If you live in Buffalo, NY or any of the surrounding areas you know that winter is in full swing. It’s snowy, cold, and sometimes can seem like it’s dragging on forever. In hopes to bring you some joy this winter, I wanted to share my top 5 road trip ideas that are less than 3 hours from Buffalo, NY. All of these spots are places I visit frequently and these quick trips become the highlight of my winter months. ELLICOTVILLE, NY

Why it’s great in winter: Known for its ski resorts and charming village atmosphere, Ellicottville offers a cozy, snowy retreat with skiing, shopping, and great food.

  • Where to Stay:
    • Holiday Valley Resort – A fantastic slopeside resort offering ski-in/ski-out access, cozy cabins, and a range of amenities for a full winter getaway experience. We used to stay here every NYE when I was younger and I have such great memories here.
    • The Inn at Holiday Valley – A more intimate setting with a beautiful lodge feel, complete with a pool and hot tub to relax after a day on the slopes.
    • Air B&B – For a more budget-friendly option, rent a chalet with friends! There are a lot of great options available and most are close to town.
    • Basecamp EVL– These tiny houses are the perfect size for a winter getaway. They offer 11 tiny cabins with four different sizes and layout options sleeping 4-6 people. All of the cabins are well decorated and equipped with the same amenities you’d find in a typical household.

  • Where to Eat:
    • West Rose – A cozy upscale steakhouse with an inviting atmosphere. Ideal for a warm and delicious dinner after a day on the slopes. This is handsdown my favorite spot for dinner and if you want a night cap head over to The Banq for a more upscale vibe and Balloons if you are hoping for an exciting late night.
    • The Ellicottville Brewing Company – A local favorite for craft beers, comfort food, and a vibrant après-ski vibe.
    • Dinas – I always love Dinas for brunch!

  • What to Do:
    • Ski or snowboard at Holiday Valley or HoliMont – With varied slopes and a great snowpark, these resorts cater to both beginners and advanced skiers.
    • Snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at Holiday Valley.
    • Take a scenic drive or walk through Ellicottville Village for unique shops, local art, and beautiful winter scenes.
    • Attend the Ellicottville Winterfest if you’re visiting in February for a mix of ice sculpting, live music, and other winter festivities.
    • Shop at a variety of local stores- a few of my favorites are Kazoo II, GI Threads, Daff, and Mud Sweat n’ Gears (which also has a coffee shop inside)

TORONTO, ON

Why it’s great in winter: Toronto is a dynamic metropolis with a blend of cultural experiences, winter festivities, and cozy indoor spots. In the winter, the city is lively with holiday lights, festivals, and ice skating rinks.

  • Where to Stay:
    • The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto – A luxurious, modern hotel perfect for a winter retreat with high-end amenities like a spa, fine dining, and a heated indoor pool.
    • The Drake Hotel – An artsy, boutique hotel with trendy décor and a great restaurant. The cozy atmosphere makes it ideal for a winter stay.
    • One King West Hotel & Residence – Offering both hotel rooms and suites, it’s great for longer stays with stunning views of the city skyline and Lake Ontario.
  • Where to Eat:
    • Buca – Known for its Italian cuisine, Buca is an amazing spot for comfort food like pasta and pizza in a chic setting.
    • Aloette – A contemporary French restaurant that’s perfect for a cozy yet upscale dinner.
    • Winterlicious Festival – If you’re in Toronto in late January or early February, don’t miss the Winterlicious event, where many of the city’s best restaurants offer prix-fixe menus.
    • Forno Cultura–  I stop here every time I’m in Toronto! They are third generation bakers who make the most delicious Italian food.
    • There are SO many restaurants in Toronto, many of which I haven’t tried so definitely ask locals recommendations while you are there!
  • What to Do:
    • Visit the Toronto Islands and try ice skating on the outdoor rinks or take a winter walk to enjoy the snowy views of the city skyline.
    • Explore the Distillery District, which comes alive during the holidays with its Christmas Market, warm drinks, and local artisans.
    • Go to the Royal Ontario Museum or the Art Gallery of Ontario to stay warm and immerse yourself in art and culture.
    • Try skating at Nathan Phillips Square, one of the most iconic outdoor rinks in Canada, with beautiful city views.
    • There are also a variety of concerts and shows in the area so be sure to search if there’s something exciting going on while you are there.
    • If you’re ready to bundle up- take a scenic walk along the Harbourfront Centre and enjoy the winter breezes.

NIAGARA ON THE LAKE, ON

Why it’s great in winter: This charming town near Niagara Falls is known for its picturesque views, wine country, and cozy ambiance during the winter months. It’s quiet and romantic, making it perfect for a peaceful retreat.

  • Where to Stay:
    • Prince of Wales Hotel – A luxurious, Victorian-style hotel offering elegant rooms, a cozy fireplace lounge, and a renowned spa.
    • Harbour House Hotel – A charming boutique hotel with a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and located just steps from the shops and restaurants.
  • Where to Eat:
    • Tea at The Prince of Wales Hotel- Even if you are heading up for the day, afternoon tea is always a delight. In the winter there is no better way to warm up than aromatic teas and delicious treats.
    • The Peller Estates Winery – Enjoy a warm meal paired with world-class wines. Their winter menus are a perfect match for the season.
    • Treadwell Cuisine – Known for farm-to-table dining, Treadwell offers an inviting setting to enjoy seasonal dishes with local ingredients.
    • The Irish Harp Pub – Cozy up with a Guinness and traditional pub fare. This local favorite offers a relaxed atmosphere during the winter months.
  • What to Do:
    • Take a winter wine tour of the Niagara Wine Region – Visit wineries such as Inniskillin, Peller Estates, or Jackson-Triggs for tastings, and enjoy cozy, intimate settings in the tasting rooms.
    • Take a scenic winter walk through Queen Street, which is beautiful and has a variety of stores to shop.
    • Visit Fort George National Historic Site to learn about the history of the area, or check out the Shaw Festival Theatre for indoor entertainment. Jax is a huge history buff and always loves experiences like this.
    • Enjoy ice skating at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Ice Rink (weather permitting) or explore the local parks for some quiet winter strolls.

THE LAKE HOUSE ON CANANDAIGUA

Why it’s great in winter: Located on the picturesque Canandaigua Lake, this upscale resort offers a cozy, lakeside winter escape with a focus on relaxation and local culture.

  • Where to Stay:
    • The Lake House on Canandaigua – A stunning lakeside property with contemporary rooms, beautiful lake views, an indoor pool, and a top-tier restaurant. It’s a perfect spot for a peaceful winter retreat.

  • Where to Eat:
    • Rose Tavern– Enjoy locally sourced meals with a view of the lake. In winter, they serve cozy comfort food like warm soups, stews, and roasted meats.
    • Simply Crepes – A local favorite in Canandaigua for breakfast or lunch, offering a wide variety of sweet and savory crepes.
    • The Inn on the Lake – This charming venue offers delicious dinner options with lake views, perfect for a romantic dinner in winter.

  • What to Do:
    • Take a winter walk along Canandaigua Lake – The peaceful, snow-covered surroundings make for a quiet and beautiful escape.
    • Explore the nearby Finger Lakes Wine Country – Though some wineries may be closed in winter, many still offer private tastings, making it an ideal time to explore the region’s wineries without the crowds.
    • Spend a day at the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum to learn about local history, or visit nearby Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park for a winter tour of the estate.
    • Enjoy some outdoor winter activities like snowshoeing, ice fishing, or simply take in the scenic views.

SKANEATELES

Why it’s great in winter: This small town by Skaneateles Lake transforms into a winter wonderland. It’s known for its charming village, cozy inns, and peaceful lake views.

 

  • Where to Stay:
    • The Inns of Aurora – A collection of luxury inns in the Finger Lakes region, offering elegant rooms, cozy lounges, and a fantastic spa experience. Perfect if you are hoping for a laid back spa weekend and only 30 minutes from Skaneateles.
    • Mirbeau Inn & Spa – A luxurious, French-inspired spa resort that’s perfect for a relaxing winter getaway with a fantastic spa and restaurant.
  • Where to Eat:
    • 1833 Kitchen & Bar – This is the more upscale restaurant at the main Inn and always a delight! With an extensive wine menu, delicious seasonal cocktails, and food that you’ll be dreaming about until your next stay.
    • Fargo- If you are looking for a more casual lunch or dinner, Fargo needs to be on your list. It’s the coziest spot with delicious food and very historic. Fun fact- it was the first studio of Richard and Victoria MacKenzie-Childs.
    • The Sherwood Inn – Located on the lakefront, this historic inn offers delicious, comfort food, perfect for warming up after a day outside. My mom and I had lunch here on our recent fall getaway and can’t wait to go back!
    • Rosalie’s Cucina – A local favorite for Italian cuisine, offering hearty, delicious pasta and a cozy ambiance.
    • Blue Water Grill – Located on the lakefront with fantastic seafood options and views of the snow-covered lake.

  • What to Do:
    • Plan a spa day at the stunning Inns of Aurora spa
    • Visit the Skaneateles Winter Farmer’s Market (if visiting in early winter) for local goods and seasonal produce.
    • Go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing at nearby Butternut Creek Nature Preserve.
    • Check out the Skaneateles Historical Society or take a winter stroll through the charming downtown area filled with boutique shops, cozy cafés, and festive lights. A few of my personal favorite stores are Sea Culture, Emma + James, Local Branch, Skaneateles 300
    • You MUST stop by the Patisserie and get some baked goods- the chocolate chip scone is my favorite .
