Hello from my second snow day from school this year! Winter in Buffalo, New York, is no joke. From lake-effect snowstorms to chilling winds, it can be a battle just to leave the house, let alone look fashionable. So many people immediately associate Buffalo with snow and yes we get a lot, but I promise Buffalo has a lot more to offer! But being stylish and practical aren’t mutually exclusive, especially if you know a few insider tricks. So, whether you live in a snowy area and you’re tired of your boring black puffer jacket or are heading somewhere snowy on a trip soon- here are my tips for looking your best in the winter!
In Buffalo, temperatures can swing from crisp and sunny to freezing and snowy within hours (especially when its windy). Layering is the key to staying comfortable while still looking put-together. Start with a base layer—think thermal tops, leggings, and wool socks to keep your body temperature regulated. Add a cozy sweater or a fitted turtleneck for some style, and top it off with a warm, weatherproof outer layer. You can definitely elevate this look a bit too! For example in the look below I layered a merino turtleneck, a houndstooth blazer, and a warm wool jacket on top with a skinny jean and tall waterproof boots on the bottom. Even though there are lots of layers, I find this outfit still shows my personal style!
Opt for a wool blend or cashmere sweater for a luxe touch. A chunky knit sweater with a bold pattern can be both cozy and a statement piece, while also adding texture to your outfit.

When it’s snowing sideways and temperatures dip below freezing, the coat you choose becomes your winter wardrobe’s most important piece. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for warmth. A great coat can make or break your winter look, and there are so many chic options out there.
Whether you go for a classic wool peacoat, a faux fur-lined parka, or a sleek puffer jacket, just make sure it’s built to handle the weather. Look for options that are insulated, water-resistant, and have a hood. I also prefer coats that have a removable hood so I can take it on and off depending on the look I’m going for! If you don’t need something waterproof- faux fur is also very in right now and the perfect option for a night out.Pro tip: Choose a coat in a bold color like deep burgundy, olive green, or mustard for a pop of color in the dreary winter months. I have an olive green parka from LL Bean and not only is it functional, but it’s also so flattering and adds a perfect pop of color.
A coat with a belt (even adding your own) or tailored waist will add shape and structure, making you look effortlessly stylish while staying warm.

The right accessories can not only keep you warm but also take your outfit from good to great. Think oversized scarves, stylish gloves, and chic beanies. Buffalo winters are notorious for their wind chill, so investing in high-quality, cozy accessories will keep you toasty without sacrificing style.
Experiment with scarves in luxurious materials like cashmere or merino wool for an upscale feel. A variety of colors and patterns can also elevate a look- I always love to add a plaid or leopard print to winter styling.
STYLISH WINTER ACCESSORIES:
Let’s face it: Buffalo winters can mean deep snow, slush-filled sidewalks, and ice patches at every turn. So, while you may love the idea of wearing cute boots, make sure they’re also functional. Look for stylish waterproof boots with a durable, non-slip sole. A good pair of knee-high leather boots or Chelsea boots can elevate your look without sacrificing practicality.
Choose a pair of boots with a sturdy heel or wedge for a little extra height. If you’re walking through snowdrifts, opt for fur-lined boots with a thick rubber sole that can handle slippery surfaces while still looking chic.
FAVORITE FOOTWEAR:
Winter fashion in Buffalo often leans toward deeper tones, which not only look stylish but also tend to hide stains from slushy snow. While you can always count on your blacks and grays, don’t shy away from rich jewel tones like emerald green, navy blue, or deep plum. These colors are flattering and can bring some vibrancy to your winter wardrobe, even when it’s gray and dreary outside.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Pair a navy blue coat with a deep mustard scarf or wear a plum sweater with a neutral gray skirt. Mixing rich tones keeps your outfit fresh and lively.
If you’re the kind of girl who loves to walk along the Buffalo waterfront or take a hike in one of our many parks, you’ll need activewear that can stand up to the elements. Luckily, sporty and stylish options abound. High-quality leggings, thermal-lined jackets, and moisture-wicking tops can keep you moving without freezing. Top it all off with a cute baseball cap or a slouchy beanie, and you’ve got a practical, stylish winter workout look.
. Pairing sleek black leggings with a fun, patterned puffer jacket can give you a sporty yet stylish vibe that’s perfect for those days you’re out exploring the city.
While we often associate sunscreen with summer, Buffalo girls know that winter sun can be just as harsh on the skin, especially with the reflective snow. Protect your skin with a good SPF moisturizer—even on cloudy days. If you’re layering on heavy moisturizers, make sure they are lightweight and breathable for easy application under makeup.
Look for moisturizers that have a built-in tint to give you an added glow in the winter months.
Winter weather can take a toll on your skin. The dry air inside combined with the freezing temperatures outside can leave you feeling parched. Embrace moisturizing balms, hand creams, and hydrating face masks as part of your winter routine to stay glowing and feeling good. A little bit of extra skin care goes a long way in preventing dryness, cracks, and chapped lips.
Add a tinted lip balm with SPF to your daily winter routine—your lips will thank you for the moisture and protection.
MY FAVORITE WINTER SKINCARE:
Winter in Buffalo may test your style stamina, but it’s also an opportunity to get creative with styling. With the right layers, accessories, and footwear, you can stay stylish no matter what the season throws at you. From cozy, textured knits to stylish, weather-resistant coats, there’s no reason why you can’t be the chicest girl in town—snowstorm or not. So, next time you find yourself heading out into the Buffalo cold, remember: style is all about confidence and how you feel in an outfit. Layer up, embrace color, and most importantly, stay warm.
